Tell us who you are!
My name is Alex Bulbena and I was born in Barcelona (Spain) 33 years ago. I studied a degree in Economics at Pompeu Fabra University and recently took an MBA at IESE Business School. Head of Business Development at Grupo Julia with 9 years of professional experience mostly gained in Healthcare and Tourism industries. I have been lucky enough to live in Argentina for 6 months (academic Exchange in Buenos Aires) and in the UK for 2 years (I was working in London at Rank Group). Recently married with a wonderful woman called Maria 🙂
Tell us more about your career steps and other projects you were part of!
I started my professional career at Rank Group in London (leading company in the gaming industry focused on Casinos, Bingos and Betting platforms) where spent 2 years working as a Customer Relationship Management Executive. I developed business strategies and associated marketing activities for the Spanish market, preparing online campaigns and delivering performance analysis through KPI’s.
I then moved back to Barcelona to start working for Palex Medical (leading company in the manufacture and distribution of medical devices in Spain and Portugal.) I initially held the position of Business Analyst reporting to the GM and later on was promoted to Product Marketing Manager. Main responsibilities were provide financial and business reports to the Group Board of Directors, monitor P&L performance, financial plans and budgets and negotiate business arrangements and distribution contracts conditions.
In November 2014, while taking the Executive MBA program, I joined the International Business Development Team of Grupo Julià, a leading company in the Transport and Tourism industry. Currently established in 40 cities of 9 countries, employing 1,500 staff and being a market leader in the tour operation, incoming tourism services and Tourist Vehicles (Hop-on Hop-off). In January’16 I was promoted to Business Development Director to lead the group expansion strategy. Basically I am responsible for developing new markets and ventures, enhancing existing markets and driving the overall sales and profitability.
What does “Social Capital” mean to you?
“Social Capital” is the network, ethics and thoughts in society that allow individuals and groups to rely on each other to establish trustful and mutually beneficial agreements.
What is/has been your biggest achievement professionally and personally?
My biggest professional achievement up to date has been to establish new companies in different countries such as Spain, Dubai, UK, Italy and Mexico. It’s been such an enriching experience; hiring new employees, mentoring teams and always trying to get the right balance between profitability and people.
What skills, experiences or incidences helped you to get you to where you are today? What hindered?
I would say that one of the most prolific episodes in my life has been to live in different countries, having had the opportunity to meet very inspiring people and learning from different cultures.
